Fresh data released by Hitwise Intelligence indicates that Facebook volume continues to grow. On Christmas Day 2007 Facebook reached a peak in traffic that wasn’t surpassed until July 2008. Traffic reached a new high on Christmas Eve 2008 when Facebook saw its highest ever traffic level - reaching 2.18% of all US Internet visits compared with 1.42% average for November. The site reached a ranking of 5th among All Categories of websites (compared to 8th for November). This represents a 54% increase on 24th December 2008 compared with the average for November and a 53% increase year on year.
For the health and medical category, WebMD was the leading search term in November 2008. Weight Watchers and GNC made the top 10 search terms. Mayo Clinic and Medicare were ranked in the top 10 as well. This is telling you that now is the time to promote fitness and weight loss as New Year resolutions kick in gear for 2009. If you don’t already have a Facebook Page for your organization, it’s not too late as traffic continues to increase year over year. A great strategy will be to tie the Facebook Page to your website with information on fitness and weight loss programs to include additional health information and health events.
